O dear, the MEME attack is back!!! And here I am so glad that it was over SOME time ago. Looks like I thought too soon! Haha!but never the less, being the sport that I am and the fact that I think this is a pretty unique meme, I’m taking on Single Guy’s challenge. Thank goodness he is such a kind soul and didn’t put any curse to this meme ⦡mp;#8364;“ can you imagine if he cursed me with a taste bud-less tongue???? Oy, I think would be a lot worst that a lifetime of bad sex!!

So any way!here goes, my 5 childhood MEMEries of things to eat in no particular order :-

Wild boar
My parents brought me up to eat anything under the sun. Thus, I’m not a fussy eater at all. I would try *almost* anything under the sun once just so I wouldn’t die knowing that I COULD have enjoyed something I passed over when I was 35. So having to eat wild boar was no big deal. We used to get wild boar quite easily because my dad had a lot of friends in the market place and they would offer him some, if they had any in hand. Wild boar is best cooked (to my knowledge) in dried curry style.

20 sen Keropok (Fish crackers)
This was THE junk food of my time especially in primary school. (See? I can still remember which mean that I’m not THAT old. YAY!!) I remember clearly how addicted I was to this keropok which one makcik (oldish Malay lady) used to sell RIGHT in front of our school coz that’s where she lived ⦡mp;#8364;“ right in front of my school. It costs me 20sen a pack and she would snip the top of the packet off and pour in a ladle full of (diluted) sweet chilli sauce and when the keropok soaked up the sauce ⦡mp;#8364;“ Ooooooo lala!!! Life couldn’t be any better!.one packet was never enough. Imagine the number of cock and bull stories I would have to come up with just to get some extra sens from Daddy to buy that keropok, sometimes I couldn’t be bothered so I’d snitch some from the car. (He was a teacher in MY school ⦡mp;#8364;“ what a LIVING NIGHTMARE!! Thank goodness he wasn’t MY teacher.) When I didn’t tell him about it and he found out, I wore pretty ’stripes’ to school the next day on my leg. THAT’S discipline for you.

Bread, butter and milk
Believe it or not, until TODAY!. I still love eating bread and drinking milk. Ever since I was a kiddy, I would bring bread and butter/jam/kaya to school. Right up till I was in my forms (secondary school), I never stopped drinking milk either and even now!. although my milk consumption has drastically dropped and replaced with TEH TARIK. I was drinking milk DAILY until I was in Form 3 or Form 4 then I switched to Milo. I only slowly started drinking tea, in Form 5 (if my memory serves me right). It’s only NOW that I’m a full blown teh tarik drinker. (It suddenly struck me as to WHY I’m huge ⦡mp;#8364;“ I’ve got strong and large bones.)

Mummy’s Fruitcake
My mum’s not only the BEST-EST cook in the whole wide world, she’s also the FINEST baker too. She comes up with the most amazing recipes, it’s amazing I’m still a ‘baby’ hippo and not some huge mama hippo today. There’s nothing I don’t like about my mum’s cooking and I’m sure you know that I’m not lying here. You’ve SEEN her dishes so there’s no doubt about her cooking abilities. (If you haven’t seen my mummy’s cooking, it’s somewhere in this blog. Heh. Hint : She cooked for my birthday party and engagement too.) Her most famed recipe is her fruitcake which is just marvelicious!!! She’s making a few cakes now as Christmas is getting close so the WHOLE house is smelling of brandy ⦡mp;#8364;“ YUM!!! You have no idea how heavenly fruitcake in the baking smells like ⦡mp;#8364;“ O M G!..killer!!!

Biawak (Monitor Lizard) Saved the BEST for last…
If you can remember, my first food memory was wild boar and that I’m used to eating weird meats (although I still have not managed to sum up enough guts to down a balut). Anyway, we (my dad & uncle) used to catch and skin monitor lizards and I tell you, it’s not easy catching it and it’s even tougher to skin them, I kid you not! You need skill. Biawaks were quite easy to obtain when our forest was lush meaning that you can hardly find them around nowadays and even if you do, they would most likely have been run over. I guess this is the only reason why I haven’t had any biawak for the last 12 years maybe. It’s been a LONG time but I remember we (dad and some teachers) caught one in my primary school and it was the largest one I ever saw. It had a stunted tail and it was the best I ever had too. As with wild boar, biawaks are best cooked in dried curry style and taken with beer, while watching football ⦡mp;#8364;“ a common sight in my grandparents home. The texture of the flesh is almost similar to beef but a little more tough and stringy. Please be forewarned not to expect TOO much flesh as they are rather skinny and bony creatures.

And that, my friends are the fond memories of food from my childhood although I could go on and on about it, I think I should stop and give others a chance to continue this meme. There seems to be a different way of tagging where I have to list down the last 5 (including myself) who have been tagged and then followed by those who are GOING to be tagged (at least 3, or more) so here goes :

1) Funky Cookies
2) Teh Tarik Satu
3) Beer Brat
4) Sngl Guy
5) Me

People who need to start cracking their heads :

1) Hedonistics Anon – coz I know she and I have interesting & *almost* similar taste in food
2) Cmos – coz I KNOW he’s SUCH a sport (Can still say no arr??) & is a kaki makan (King of Foods)
3) Helen – coz her blogs are awesome and I am wondering whether she can remember what she ate when she was still in primary school. Hehehe!!
4) JoeC – how could I have missed you out???? Yioh!! Anyway, consider urself tagged!!
