The grass is always green on my side.

Bearer of bad news

My day started off fine yesterday. But it got real bad just before hitting home. In my current job, I need to make callbacks for various reasons. Among the many is to attend to enquiries and yesterday, I added another role to my already long list of responsibilities - the bearer of bad news.

As it is, we’re already getting an earful from the people we call. Some of them are happy that we’re looking into the matter for them and are trying to sort things out for them, but the others are just plain ol’ ungrateful toot-toots! Not only are they rude, they are sarcastic and even if it ain’t your fault, they make it sound like as if it was. What really pisses me off is the fact that they don’t realise that we are here to HELP them. Don’t they realise that shouting and screaming at us won’t make things better, in fact, what it does is that it puts us off from putting in that extra effort to help them. At least this is what I feel….then again, I do understand to a certain extend why these sickos feel that way - if put in their situation, I might be pissed off too but I’m civilised enough to not go screaming my head off. On the other hand, I may sound annoyed but that’s acceptable by my standards - based on the circumstances of course.

Anyway, I had the horrible task of calling up this customer to tell him some really bad news about an issue we were dealing with. I found it so hard to pick the phone up and dial his number. It was more difficult because he was one of the nice guys who didn’t really push it and it was easy to deal with. What with some personal issues he was having, it somehow affected the outcome of the problem we had and I had to tell him that there was nothing I could do to help him. :crying: It was so tough for me because I find it hard to say ‘No’ to people and worst still, tell them bad news. That’s why I find myself accommodating or worst still, take the beating for it, so to speak. *sigh*

Maybe I’m taking this way too seriously. It is after all part and parcel of my job but I still find it hard to swallow. *sigh sigh* As much as I’m enjoying my job now - sometimes, I find that I really am disturbed by it. The job’s a great one! I love it but there are certain parts of it I wished I didn’t have to do. *sigh again*

When I was working in a bank, sometimes, I just blame it on the “management” when delivering bad news to the customer. I would just say “Sorry but my boss said…” or “Sorry but my management have decided….”.

Of course, I add words likes “I understand your problem…” and “I have argued for you with the management but…” to show that it was not my decision in the first place (although 50% of the time, it was…hehe)

Moral of the story: Follow the footsteps of our local politicians…it is easy to “tai-chi” things (most of the time).

There are rude peoples who blame even though we help them. I can find very little people who can understand the real problem . Take it easy.

hey Yvy, look on the bright side…imagine someone else calling up that nice guy instead of u…i mean if i were the guy, i’d be happy that it’s u passing me the bad news than some total stranger who doesn’t give a tuppence on my situation. ;)

as someone else put it, hang in there. chinese have a saying that the boat/ship will straighten it’s course as it nears the pier/jetty.

I know what it’s like to have a sunny disposition, you want to be only the bearer of good news. Was in the service industry too and sometimes I think I felt more affected by the bad news than the recipient itself. Does that make sense? Ah well, whatever it is, I’m sure you take it in your stride woman!
