Ted and I went to watch this yesterday. I’ve been waiting very partiently for this movie ever since I heard that Mel was busy with his next movie after The Passion of Christ [which I have watched too]. I would count the days till it finally arrived and we marched over to the cinema to catch the 3.10pm show. The movie lasted 138 minutes and a well worth 138 minutes it was!
Now, to be begin with….I personally felt that the ending was somewhat cliche and is a rather common ending but the major difference is the setting and environment of the movie. The location, so to speak. The directing was good [Go Mel!!] but what captivated me was the location….it was superb!!! Although the stars in this movie are not well known, I think they did a great job, even Seven [Dahlia Fernandez] who was acting for the first time and what a huge project she took upon herself! Good job dear….
Overall, it’s about how a man whose village is ravaged and how he survives all odds to return to his village to save the ones he loves. Sounds like a typical knight in shining armour who saves the damsel in distress at the end of the day, and it is. But the difference is, the movie is MA15+. It is barbaric. It is violent. It is bloody. It’s my kinda movie.
I do not suggest it for the weak of heart, although it is not as violent as Saw 3. So, don’t worry. It has its funny and wickedly obscene moments and you must watch it on big screen.

I know you can easily get a copy from Uncle Ho and unless you got a big screen at home, it would not be the same. I’m not sure how much of it will be censored by the censorship board in Malaysia but I think many scenes may be cut out and that is such a pity coz those are the essence of the movie. I was telling Ted after the movie yesterday how I think Malaysia is going to screen it : The film will just show the forest with the background script being read as the scantily clad men and women walk around and when the icky bits happen, everything would go slow-mo of a scene from somewhere in the beginning of the show [ie kids playing or men fighting] and suddenly, you’re at a different location and the storyline has taken a major twist, and you’re left dropped-jaw wondering what the heck just happened. I can just see it now…..aiyo, so sad lar!
However, if some of you have already seen it, please let me know how well my prediction was or if I was totally wrong and the censorship board actually allowed more than I thought. Which I doubt….in any case, lemme know.

Nice review! Going to a movie this Friday with a friend and we were trying to decide between Apocalypto and Curse of the Golden Flower. Curse won, but I hope to see this movie before it leaves the big screen.

I don’t think they showed this in our local cinemas here. I caught a few minutes of it at an one of Uncle Ho’s shops, and boy, it really really got me glued to the screen, even though they were just chopping people up! ewwwww! one copy for me, for sure!

Hiya, saw the movie in DVD, a good copy and the movie was pretty good effort by Mel and the cast, a gripping tale and clever story twist. I think the exotic setting makes it more attractive then say a NY setting or some where modern. A worth while movie to catch in the big screen if there is zero censor. Cheers!
