It’s Australia Day today and the whole of Australia is celebrating this joyous occasion.
Australia Day is Australia’s official national day, 26 January. It commemorates the landing of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove on that day in 1788. Just a bit of history I snitched off my good ol’ pal, Wikipedia. Another big thing which happened was The Big Day Out which happened yesterday. The Big Day Out (BDO) is an annual music festival that tours Australia and New Zealand. As of 2006, it features 8 stages accommodating popular contemporary rock music, electronic music, mainstream international acts and local acts. One of the groups there is called Sick Puppies. And it all started out when Juan Mann started this thingy down in Sydney, the city where he was holding out a card saying “Free Hugs” and he was doing exactly that. Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whose sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. But after he ran into some trouble with the authorities, he got signatures instead of hugs and he got 10,000 signatures and hugs in total!! Pretty awesome. The song is great and it’s called ‘All The Same’ and I totally love it!
Anyways, Ted and I are off to Parramatta Park to catch some action. The weather looks good and promising without the sun to burn off a few layers of my skin so I’m happy. Hopefully, I’ll come back with loads of pictures to share with you. See ya later!!
After the event :
Ted and I got back about 2pm just now. The park was not really that packed but certain spots had more people than others. Not surprised there - kiddy rides and the BBQ place was crowded whilst the armoury and sheep shearing hardly had any people! :ermm:
On the whole I thought that it was a nice day out and thank goodness for such a cooperative weather. Although the sun was out, there was breeze off and on and even a stray cloud too. So it wasn’t that bad. If I wasn’t complaining, I’m sure the rest found it bearable too. I managed to take a few snapshot of this and that but what really disappointed me was the fact that there was no animal petting section. Although the Zoomobile from Taronga Zoo was there, they didn’t allow anyone to hold the animals. They brought so few with them, I was thoroughly disappointed. They had a large python, an echidna, a Gang Gang cuckatoo, a stick insect of some sort, a tree frog, a lizard and a tortoise. And most of them were in their glass boxes. The only one on the ground was the echidna and the ranger was holding the snake while everyone else was only allowed to stroke the snake. How boring!
The other thing that caught my attention was the doggie race that was going on. Omg, it was so funny and hilarious! They had all sorts of dogs there - from the smallest which I think is a Maltese to the [almost] huge ones like Dalmatians and those really tough looking mongrel like dogs. And all of them were so excited about the race. It was relay with 4 dogs on each team. Each dogs had to race across the field, jump across railings, fetch a ball then run back. Then the following dog would do the same. The huger dogs moved so slowly while the smaller ones were like bullets out of a shotgun!! So fast….and the owners - omg, I think they were more hysterical and excited then the dogs! You had to be there to have seen it. I took a clip of it and will try to upload it tonight. Hopefully it turns out ok.
