I may be an animal lover but I am totally anal about letting birds fly into our kitchen. It so happens that there are these wild rainbow lorikeets who drop by a couple of times a day on a daily basis waiting to be fed. Being the bird nut in the family, Ted always makes sure that there is food there for them, be it some apples or sunflower seeds. In fact, he also makes sure that I feed them too. But sometimes, I get fedup because #1. they are very demanding and if you’re slowly in getting their food, they can ’scold’ you ie chirp VERY loudly and start tapping at the window which I normally leave little open for ventilation. #2. They make a big mess on the ledge when eating apples because they are messy and more than half of the apples drops off anyway. So whoever who parks underneath our window may get bits of apple every now and then. And I personally feel bad about it. In fact, I would be pissed if I saw bits of apple on my car!! I’d totally freak out. Hence I prefer to just give them the seeds.
But noooooo…..Ted says they must have a mixed diet. *rolls eyes* Anyway, one day, I was at the PC doing my thing when I heard wings flapping nearby. I thought I was hearing things so I walked towards where the sound was coming from which happened to be the kitchen and lo, behold…..

There was a bird on my fridge.
I went totally ballistic because I didn’t what to do first!! I wasn’t sure if I should shoo it out first or take a picture or what! Plus with Arianna in the way wondering why Mummy was jumping up and down, talking to herself like a mad woman wasn’t really helping. I knew I had to take a picture first for Ted but I was so afraid that it would fly into the hall and then I’d be screwed coz I wouldn’t know how to get it out then. So I quickly took a few shots and then lured it out with birdseed. It’s mate was waiting patiently outside the window, looking in and watching all the commotion. Aiyoo…..I could have BBQ-ed them for lunch la!
The other incident was a home invasion while Arianna and I were taking a nap one afternoon. I normally leave the cut apple just inside the window so apparently these birds are quite used to having things their way. I did hear something crash but couldn’t be bothered to get up and check it out. So when we did awake from our slumber, I was totally shocked to see that they had not only eaten the apple but had also pushed down the stuff that I left standing above the sink!!! Too much right…..but Ted thought it was very funny.
Not.
Lord only knows what is going to happen next time. I have to make it a habit not to leave my window open too big, otherwise they can squeeze themselves in! Cacat animals…..

we may find them cute & all so we tend to feed them but they are so demanding creatures & can be aggressive when not getting what they want. guess they were right telling us not to feed wild animals everywhere & sooner or later something bad’s gonna happen..

They are pretty birds alright, but a nuisance they can be. We have a bird feeder in our backyard for the birds and if there are no more bird food in the feeder, these birds will be hanging around the kitchen window or hang around the feeder tapping on the glass - sorta reminding us to fill the feeder up. It can be funny and annoying at the same time.

dawn : yea, i know what u mean. but with winter, a bit kesian them oso la.
che-cheh : well, from the looks of it, they are more like teens. only come home for makan but the rest of the time are out lepaking! lol
wuching : i think these birds are more on the tame side than the wild because they are ‘friendly’ as in they are not afraid when ur hand is stretched out to put the food down. that said, it is indeed our fault that these wild birds are no longer wild because of modernization n rapid development their natural habitat is gone. sad isnt it?
